My Role

I filmed, directed and edited this documentary for BBC World News in which Lucia Blasco investigates two very different ways of dealing with the growing problem of household waste.

In Paraguay, the Recycled Orchestra of Cateura is making music by salvaging material from the country's largest landfill, while the city of Linköping in Sweden is burning its rubbish to produce electricity and heating for its inhabitants.

The programme was broadcast globally on BBC World News and in the UK on the BBC News Channel.

Lucia also told this story in a BBC World Service documentary, produced by Mike Lanchin which is available to listen to online here.

Behind The Scenes

Shooting around Paraguay's largest landfill was tricky. The landfill manager granted us an interview and allowed us to speak to his workers, but shots from the ground just didn't do justice to the scale of the place.

So we engaged a local drone operator to shoot pictures from the air. These were used throughout the documentary and looked particularly eye-catching in the trailers on BBC World News TV.
